How to Fix a Leak in a Spa

    • 1). Disconnect all the power to the spa to avoid electrocution. Remove panels from the side of spa. Start by looking for obvious signs of leaks such as loose bolts and union fittings, which commonly come loose during use due to vibration. Hand-tighten the fittings or use a screw driver and gently tap with a hammer to tighten. Do not use a wrench -- it can damage the fitting.

    • 2). Troubleshoot the system to find the leak. Inspect the pump area. Pump leaks will need to be fixed with replacement parts or gaskets. Test the water level if the exact source of leak is hard to find. Mark the water level with crayon or grease pen. Run the spa for 24 hours and mark the water drop. Refill the spa and run for 24 hours with system off and mark water drop again. If the drop in water is the same for both tests, it may be a vessel leak. A greater water drop while the system is running may be a pressure lock, and one while the system is off may be a suction leak.

    • 3). Inspect pipes, valves and fittings for cracks. Repair a crack with a leak sealer specifically formulated for spas that contains a filler and hardener. This compound is found at local pool supply or home improvement stores.

    • 4). Check PVC fittings such as couplings, elbows and tees for leaks. Repair a bad pipe by cutting out the section, replacing it and sealing. Repair a fitting by applying a PVC primer and cement and attaching a clip-on fitting.

    • 5). Look for a jet leak by inspecting water drop when spa is not running. If the water level stops dropping at a jet this may be the source of the leak. Repair the leak by replacing the jet or applying a layer of silicone sealant around the gasket and fiberglass under the shell.
