• Curtains can be used to make the window look bigger. Extending the width of the rod and window treatment will make the window look wider. Hanging the rod closer to the ceiling and allowing your curtains to flow to the floor will make your window look taller. These tricks are sometimes necessary when the builder of the house put a window in that did not match the size of the room. The curtains can also add texture to a stark room with the use of prints and colors. They can also make a harsh room a little softer through the use of soft colors and lace.
  
  In addition to the visual affects provided by the curtain, they can make your room more energy efficient. Curtains hung over windows keep the room cooler in the summer by keeping out sun's rays. In the winter, the curtains will keep drafts from stealing your heat.
  
  

Styles

• The print, color and fabric of the curtain will set a tone for the room. Formal curtains are typically darker in color. The print of a formal curtain is either tone-on-tone so the print creates a textured look or the print will be large in scale. Tiny flowers usually do not have a place in the formal living room drapery.
  
  Tab top curtains can be used alone or with a valance. The tab tops can be formal or semi-formal, depending on the length you choose and the pattern. These curtains are found often in light colors that allow the sunlight into the room. A curtain that falls about one foot from the floor in length is considered semi-formal. A formal curtain will extend to one inch above the floor.
  
  Country curtains are casual. They are commonly created from a lightweight cotton or lace. County curtains are very common and are usually displayed with the panels pulled back about half way down the length and tied to hooks that are attached to the wall. Country curtains have a ruffled valance that hangs in conjunction with the curtains.
  
  Farm curtains are probably the most casual curtain of all. They are made from a gingham print. Many homes in urban areas have farm curtains in the kitchen, especially if decorated using a rooster or farm-themed motif. Farm curtains are short, no longer than the window. They hang straight and have a simple one inch rod pocket on top. The farm curtain hangs in two panels.
