5 Foods You Should Avoid on a GERD Diet

103 31
Gerd hurts, but you do not need to put up with it.
Avoiding these five foods will help you with your Gerd diet.
Caffeine Caffeine is found in coffee as well as in tea and it can really wind up that Gerd of yours.
You probably think that you will be fine if you drink decaffeinated products, but these can also irritate that heartburn.
Remember that caffeine is also present in a number of fizzy drink products, so these should be avoided as well.
Alcohol A good whiskey with a beer chaser is a favourite of mine, but alcohol will bring on an attack.
Avoid wine with a meal as it can be quite acidic and will really bring on your symptoms.
Try substituting wine for a non-alcoholic drink such as water.
Not as much fun but it will mean the difference between enjoying a meal or suffering in agony.
I know that it can be difficult avoiding all alcohol consumption when out with friends, but if you take a non-alcoholic drink every second or third time it will reduce the effect of heartburn.
Chocolate A firm favourite with most people and often looked on as a treat.
Just be aware that chocolate can bring on your Gerd symptoms.
Watch out for this one when in restaurants, so avoid that chocolate ice cream and go for another type of dessert instead.
Peppermint Peppermint was once regarded as a cure for heartburn, but it seems to be an "old wives tale".
Peppermint, and also spearmint, will make you suffer so avoid both of these at all times.
They are popular flavour enhancers and are often included in desserts.
This is another example of where it pays to look closely at food labels to see if they have been added.
Acidic fruit and vegetables We think that fruit and vegetables form a major part of a healthy diet, and they do.
However, be aware of those acidic ones such as lemons, oranges, pineapple and tomatoes.
Any of these can really stir things up and leave you in agony.
