Care for Stephanotis

104 13

    Basics

    • Plant your stephanotis plant in a potting mix that has good drainage. It loves lots of light, however, it may not tolerate direct light during the summer months.

During the growing season---between the months of March and September---it is important to water the plants evenly. During the remaining months--- the rest period---keep it on the dry side.

Since this is a tropical plant, it will thrive in rooms that are 70 degrees F during the daylight hours and do not go below 55 to 60 degrees at night. You will also need to protect the plant from cold drafts. Avoid drafty windowsills in the winter months.

Stephanotis also likes humidity: Anything from between 40 and 80 percent relative humidity allows the plant to thrive.

Fertilize with a tropical plant fertilizer during the growing season.

    Pruning

    • The soft wood should be pruned back in spring, as this will encourage flowering. Remove any dead or damaged wood at this time. Stephanotis will produce a tangle of branches so you may also want to arrange the tangle of branches and fasten them to the trellis to create an appealing plant.

    Tips

    • When the plant is in bloom, do not move it or turn it in any way as this may cause the delicate buds to fall off.

Possible insect infestations include mealybugs and scale. If your plant does get infested, use an insecticide spray to solve the problem.

Over-watering this plant is more damaging than under-watering.
