Finding a suitable surgeon to perform surgical rejuvenation of the abdomen is not an easy task. The Internet and hard copy publications are full of advertorial and paid advertisements extolling the virtues of the surgeon with the biggest advertising budget.

Following pregnancy and childbirth ladies can be left with stretch marks, redundant skin and an apron hanging down on their lower abdomen. Once family commitments are complete rejuvenation of the abdomen can be achieved by performing an abdominal lipectomy (also known as apronectomy or abdominoplasty). Before the operation an assessment is made of the amount of loose skin and tissue that needs to be removed and an incision is planned so that once the wound is closed the scar is well concealed beneath underwear or bathers.

An incision is made, the skin is separated from the underlying tissues as far up as the ribs and the rectus muscles (known as the six pack) are stitched together to flatten the tummy and improve the contour of the waistline.

The umbilicus or belly button which remains attached to the underlying tissue is then relocated through a small incision in the overlying skin and the excess skin is excised. This operation almost always achieves its goals in giving the patient a flat abdomen which overcomes the effects of age and childbirth.

Liposuction or liposculpture is a procedure used to remove localised collections of fat which cause patients embarrassment. The most common areas for which liposuction is sought include the abdomen, the inner and outer thighs, the back and the upper arms.

Through small stab incisions often using ultrasonic liposuction for greater patient comfort, the fat is liquefied and then sucked out. The wounds are closed and compression bandages applied to ensure that the skin shrinks in a predetermined fashion thereby minimising the risk of redundant skin or overlying irregularities.

Many ladies reach middle age and develop excess skin in the upper arms which are colloquially known as bat wings. In minor degrees of bat wing deformity liposuction is an extremely effective technique to reduce the circumference of the upper arm and rejuvenate that area. In more severe cases once liposuction has been completed then excision of the excess skin is undertaken leaving a scar on the inner and lower aspect of the arm where it is well hidden. This operation known as a brachioplasty is highly successful and enables the patient to wear sleeveless tops once the scars have matured.

Another operation commonly sought by ladies is labioplasty or vulvoplasty. This embarrassing condition is typified by a redundancy of the labia minora which is not only cosmetically undesirable, but can be unhygienic as well. The operation to correct this requires a general anaesthetic and a refashioning of this area and almost always concludes with a more attractive and more comfortable appearance.
