Preventing Severe Migraine Headaches Holistically
If you are reading this you have migraines or suffered with them.
I know what that is like from a very young age.
As a child I would often get fevers in the sun and was very allergic to chocolate.
I was also very sensitive to chlorine in pools and during summer vacations or trips to my Aunt and Uncles pool party, I would often come home with terrible headaches.
I gradually grew up thinking this is who I was.
This is the way I was wired and there was nothing I could do.
Like most people who have migraines I often could not keep up sometimes with my peers on teams, at parties, eventually leading sometimes to absences later in college and then work.
Life became difficult at times feeling a failure to keep up with others, however I always knew deep inside there was probably some special calling I had where life could be easier and healthier, where somehow I could ride the migraine wave or see it coming before it got me.
It took me quite a few years but then finally at age 37 I made a decision to really embark on how to do this.
At this time I decided to study more holistically and became certified in different areas such as Health coaching and Yoga, Tai Chi and Qigong.
While I did learn so many things, what really meant more in the end was how to apply it to myself first and then to others.
Now at age 43 I make every day count as much I can in the most healthiest way and have changed my life.
Changing has made my migraines less, reducing medication and overall feeling healthier.
In other words it took me watching myself and understanding myself in many ways when a migraine came, learning new tools and new foods to eat and approaching things differently that now would become my new habits to live a healthier happier life.
Becoming successful at doing this did lead me to certain workshops of self discovery and empowerment that I felt was important on this road of changing and ultimately becoming more happier, healthier and successful.
That positive energy overflowed leading me to do the same for others.
More importantly it allowed me to hone in on what I feel is very important for prevention of a migraine and being well prepared to handle one when one comes.
The three things that I have found to be successful at this is keeping a healthy digestive tract, being physically active and to have good emotional health.
It is very important to have a healthy "gut', that's right, I'm talking about your digestive system! If you are eating processed foods, too much dairy and too much meat you can expect when the migraine comes what kind of defense you will have.
It is important to eat whole foods, not too much food, less of the processed ones and ones that have not been injected with hormones.
The second thing is to be physically active.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine migraines are sometimes caused by too much energy either in the head, liver or both.
Keeping active even if it is stretching, walking outside, or 10 to 15 minutes on a treadmill 3 to 5 times a week is crucial.
Don't forget to add some strength training in as well.
Furthermore this will induce natural endorphins and serotonin levels in your brain which is known to decrease during a migraine attack.
The third thing is emotions.
How are your emotions today and everyday? Do you wake up feeling depressed, worried or thinking too much? Are you angry hold resentment or need to tell someone how you are really feeling? It is important than that you eat well to think well, move your body to get any excess of thoughts out as well as get creative in the area of releasing your emotions in a constructive way.
In addition it is also important to surround yourself with those who support your endeavors and dreams.
Nature Walks, yoga, meditation, tai chi or also very helpful here in maintaining balance for a healthy immune system or when any imbalance or illness strikes in the brain and body.
In order to ride a migraine or to manage one I have learned is to be the master of it.
If you can master healthier eating, take care of your physical, spiritual, emotional and all areas of your health, your energy will be much better and so will you.
It took me awhile to figure this out but I'm glad that I did.
Life is much better doing what I love to do, recognizing what I must do to stay on top of migraines as well as enjoy a healthier lifestyle and sharing that with others.
