How to Change a Chlorine Pool to a Salt Water Pool
- 1). Inspect the filter system on your pool to ensure it will work with saltwater. Some filter systems may not. If you are unsure, have a professional look at your system or contact the manufacturer. The system should be in good working order prior to the conversion.
- 2). Install the chlorine generator, or cell, in the return line on the filter system. The return line is the pipe that brings filtered water into the pool. Follow the installation instructions provided with your saltwater kit for proper application. The exact installation method may vary by kit manufacturer and filter system.
- 3). Mount the power pack for the generator on a fence or post near the pool. This is a device that regulates the voltage and current going to the cell. It connects to the existing filter system for power. Follow mounting instructions from the kit. The power pack needs to be clear of the pool but still close enough to connect to the cell.
- 4). Connect the two components, the power pack and cell, together with the cable supplied with the kit.
- 5). Add the initial dose of salt to the pool water. Use pool or water softener salt. The initial dose is 1 tsp. per gallon of pool water. Some systems suggest adding salt prior to installing the generator equipment. Refer to your kit to determine when to add the salt to the pool water.
- 6). Turn on the chlorine generator at the power pack and let it run. Read the kit directions to determine when the pool is available for use.
