    Average Salary

    • The mean annual salary for receptionists, including those working in medical environments, was $26,010 in 2009, equivalent to $2,168 a month or $12.50 an hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The median salary, earned by the middle 50 percent of earners, was $25,070, the top 10 percent gained $36,620, and their counterparts in the bottom strata received an average of $17,180.

    Salary by Employer

    • The BLS data demonstrated how different sectors of the medical industry can pay different levels salaries to the receptionists that work in them. The average annual salary for receptionists workin for the offices of physicians --- the sector which employs the greatest number of medical receptionists (180,000) --- as $26,440. This is above the salary levels for personal care services, $21,080, and the offices of other health practitioners, $24,880. A medical receptionist working in the office of a dentist is liable for a mean yearly salary of $29,810.

    Salary by Geography

    • BestSampleResume.com lists average annual salaries for medical receptionists by state. It shows that among the highest paying states are Mississippi, $36,000 per year, District of Columbia, $34,000 and New York, $33,000. At the other end of the scale are Idaho, $23,000, Hawaii, $22,000 and Louisiana, $21,000. This tallies with the BLS which also put District of Columbia among the highest paying states in its 2009 survey of the whole receptionist profession, listing it at an average of $34,260.

    Outlook

    • For the occupation of receptionist as a whole the BLS expects to see a 15 percent growth in employment opportunities in the decade from 2008 to 2018. It advises that medical environments will be among the industries that will see the highest growth for receptionist jobs. Salary levels should, therefore, remain very competitive. Individuals with training and experience in a wide range of administrative skills and knowledge of computerized data systems will be best placed to achieve the highest salaries.
