How to Clean a Navel Piercing

104 17
    • 1). Wash your hands in the shower with a liquid, fragrance free soap. Do not touch the faucet or shower curtain to avoid contaminating your hands with bacteria after washing. Allow the water from the shower to run onto your stomach, moistening your navel piercing and stomach.

    • 2). Apply soap with your fingers to your navel piercing jewelry. Never use a washcloth or loofah while cleaning your navel piercing. Loofahs and washcloths can harbor bacteria from hanging in the shower and may rip or tear your piercing if the jewelry catches on a loop of the cloth or loofah.

    • 3). Rub your fingers onto the visible part of the jewelry -- above and below the piercing holes -- to place soap onto the jewelry. Soften any dry crusts on your navel piercing ring or barbell with the soap and water. Work off all of the crusts on your jewelry with your fingers. If you allow crusts to remain on your navel jewelry, the sharp crusts can cause a rip or irritation in your navel piercing if you move the jewelry through the piercing channel.

    • 4). Wash the inside of your navel and the two piercing holes. Rinse your jewelry and the piercing by allowing the water to flow onto your stomach until all the soap is gone from your piercing and jewelry. Pat your piercing and stomach dry with a disposable paper towel.
