How to Chip Around the Green
- 1). Use a pitching wedge close to the green for all chip shots, especially if you are a beginner. The pitching wedge gives the ball more loft, allowing less roll once the ball hits the green.
- 2). Hold the club with a loose grip. A tight grip will often cause you to over hit or blade the ball, which causes it to shoot out with less loft. The ball will often scoot across and off the green. A lighter grip gives you more touch on your shot, and helps create better loft on your chip.
- 3). Position the ball near your back foot to help ensure that your hands will lead the club face. Leading with your hands when using a pitching wedge helps create the proper angle of the club face to the ball, giving proper loft. Keep your wrists stiff during the swing to maintain proper club face angle.
- 4). Focus on the ball through the entire stroke. Many golfers tend to look ahead where they want the shot to go or glance at the club as it swings into the ball. Focus solely on the ball and trust your hands to guide the club. Follow the ball with your eyes as it meets and leaves the club face.
- 5). Aim to hit the ball roughly halfway between the edge of the green and the hole. Aim closer to the edge of the green when the hole slopes at a sharper angle downhill. Aim closer to the hole when it rests above the edge of the green.
- 6). Aim to hit your club on the sand as close to the ball as possible for sand trap shots around the green. Swing through the sand and seek to hit the ball between the edge of the green and the hole like on a normal chip shot.
