Photographing Wildlife When You Do Not Have a Big Lens
But, do not let this discourage you from getting out there and finding those great moments to take a picture of.
Here are some tips to help get you out there and start getting the images you want! 1.
You do not have to have that $10,000 600mm super tele photo lens! For a lot of my images I have a 300mm lens and you can pick up one of those for a couple hundred bucks and it be a name brand that you trust to deliver consistently good results.
2.
Be sure to set your digital camera to shoot in the largest RAW format that you can.
While it will take up much more memory on your memory card; it will also save the most data about the image; that will allow you to crop your image to zoom in on your subject without your final print looking pixelated.
3.
If you are photographing wildlife and you spot your subject, slow down and be quiet! Do not run up on a wild animal; you will startle them and scare them away or possibly be hurt by them.
Make slow movements whatever you do.
Take a few quiet steps towards them and then stand still again.
They will watch you (of course) but if you relax and move slowly; they will not feel threatened and run off.
But don't get too close; respect that they are wild! But, you can get close enough to get that amazing shot you are wanting! 4.
Try to not use your flash as that almost always puts the animal on alert.
Next time you are out and about; try these tips and you will be pleased with the results:) Happy hunting!
