Getting Rid of Head Lice

103 221
The dreaded bug has hit your house, no not the stomach bug...
lice.
Every family thinks they are immune, and almost every family will fall victim to this tiny yet powerful bug.
There are several treatments for lice ranging from over the counter medicines found at your corner drugstore to home remedies such as mayonnaise and vinegar to all natural lice treatments pre packaged and found on the internet.
At the drug store you can purchase Rid, Nix or other over the counter lice aids.
These powerful products use pesticides and insecticides, known as pediculicides, to kill the lice.
Although these products can work, they also have potentially serious side effects such as seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, & asthma.
Most over the counter lice treatments have two steps.
The first step is to apply the shampoo to dry hair and work into scalp, rinsing after a given amount of time.
After rinsing, the second step is to apply a special gel to the hair and comb through the hair with a comb designed for the purpose of removing nits, the tiny lice eggs that are attached to the hair shaft.
Combing is tiresome works but is essential.
All lice treatments will require this step.
Some products recommend a second treatment a week later while others say to watch the hair for two weeks and treat only if nits or lice are found.
Common products in the household that are said to help in the eradication of lice include mayonnaise and vinegar.
Two cups of mayonnaise for shoulder length hair (adjust for shorter or longer hair) massaged in the scalp and left on for several hours is said to potentially kill lice.
Some people believe that the acid in vinegar will loosen nits by dissolving the substance that attaches them to the hair.
The white vinegar may be a good start, but remember with both the mayonnaise and the white vinegar you will need to comb out the nits and remove all live lice on the head.
There are natural ingredients that when combined are a safe way of killing lice.
Oil such as tea tree, peppermint, neem, karanji, lavender oils along with a carrier oil like olive or coconut oil have been shown as an affect alternative treatment for lice removal.
Most of these treatments contain 3 steps with a preventative measure as well.
The first step is to apply an oil to loosen the nit glue.
Time varies as to how long you wait before step 2.
Step 2 is usually the actual product that will kill the lice.
It is massaged into the hair and again left on for a short amount of time.
Step 3 is to use a degreasing shampoo to wash out all of the oils from your hair.
Again, as with other treatments, the key is to check every few days for lice or nits.
