Freshwater Aquarium Fish - Choose the Right Fish For Your Freshwater Aquarium

103 13
There are many variables at play when it comes to owning aquarium freshwater fish.
Choices range from the type of tank to purchase, to picking out decorations to fill it with, to the various lighting systems.
The toughest decision of all however, is choosing the fish.
With so many varieties available, there are thousands upon thousands to purchase.
As a result of the many different species available, some people end up taking the wrong kind of fishes home with them.
When the results do not turn out well, it often discourages beginners.
Arming yourself with knowledge is the best way to learn which type of fish you should get.
For example, you might think you are buying a cute little fish for your tank only to see it turn into a much larger one as it grows.
Always find out how large a fish will get once it reaches maturity.
Determine if the fish will grow to the extent that it will present a danger to the other fish.
Not knowing the kinds of fishes can result in taking a fish that is too territorial and will bully the other fish in the tank.
The bullying stresses the other fish.
Some signs of bullying include blocking the other fish from being able to eat.
This is why having the right size tank is so important.
Fish need room to define their own space and if the tank is too small, it can make a fish bully even more aggressive.
Make sure the fish does not like to dine on other fish.
You do not want to put money into choosing just the right fish to fill the tank only to wake up one morning and find the others are all gone because they were another fish's supper.
Some fishes are loner fish and these types of fishes prefer to live alone.
They are not suited to interact with other fish and need to keep to themselves or can live only with their own kind.
If you have fish that won't work well with others, you'd have only one fish in your tank and you do not want to end up with that.
On the other hand, certain types of fishes do not live well alone and need to be in schools.
Taking only one of a school preferred fish would result in stress to that fish.
The best bet when just starting out with an aquarium is to pick fish that are hardy and can withstand the mistakes that new fish hobbyists often make.
Do not get enamoured with a tank and then look up what kind of fish to buy.
First decide what kind of fish you'd like to buy then choose what kind of surroundings and care they need.
