Lose That Weight-Don"t Procrastinate

105 8
If you're overweight, say by a stone or more, then, you know you should lose some weight, even if only for health reasons. Being significantly overweight seriously increases your risk of developing health problems like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and osteoarthritis, amongst others. Some of these diseases can cause you to die much earlier than you should, or make your quality of life much worse as you get older.

So, why not do do something about your weight problem, and lose some weight now? It is no good keep saying "I'll start a new diet next week and I'll stick to it". If you keep putting it off it shows a lack of resolve, and it's only postponing dealing with the problem which is going to get gradually worse.. It is easier to lose say, 10 pounds now, than have to confront the problem of having to shed 18 pounds in a few weeks time. Please don't procrastinate any longer. You just need to go for it.

Why are so many of us overweight anyway? It would seem that the human animal is like every other animal in being programmed to eat food whenever it is available. This is obviously a trait that has evolved because of its survival value. Previous generations of humans no doubt faced privation and starvation as food was sometimes scarce and not easily come by. Most animals will eat when food is there but they are constantly moving around and not sitting at a desk and computer all day, so they use energy and don't put on weight.

Our problem is too little exercise coupled with too high an intake of daily calories. We eat too much food and too much of the wrong kinds of food. Our food today is energy dense like never before. This is due to the tremendous increase in processed and refined foods that are in our supermarkets everywhere, high in sugars, starches and fats. Along with this increase in relatively cheap food, (carbohydrates are much cheaper to produce than proteins), has come the commercialism of the 20th century with vast amounts of advertising all around, exhorting us to buy these manufactured foods which are so attractively packaged.

If you want to lose weight you must turn a blind eye to the advertising industry. It is better to go shopping with a list of what you need and stick to that. Don't be tempted by special offers, or attractive packaging. These encourage impulse buying, and buying the wrong kinds of foods. It is easier to shop this way in a small supermarket, rather than a large one where you wander up and down endlessly, and end up putting more in your basket as a result.

Sensible shopping, with emphasis on buying good quality protein like meat and fish, fresh fruit and vegetables, will help ensure that you are eating a healthy diet, and not one loaded with refined sugars and trans-fats that will lead to excess weight, and disease later on. Your diet should be as natural as possible, avoiding processed, packaged, and junk foods, and keeping away from ready-meals and take-aways.

Many people who are overweight are reluctant to do much, or indeed any exercise, but it's not impossible if you start slowly and build up. You do not have to start jogging or running, but you should strive to achieve a brisk walk everyday of at least twenty minutes, plus a swim once or twice a week. These are two forms of exercise that anyone can do. Swimming is excellent for you as it involves a lot of different muscle groups. It is also easy since the water helps to buoy you up, and most people find a swim refreshing and enjoyable. Once these two areas of undertaking become a regular habit, you will begin to feel better in yourself and you should find that you are gradually losing weight. Keeping up regular exercise that's enjoyable is not difficult. In fact you would then miss it if you didn't do it.

Your reason to lose weight is to preserve your health and quality of life. Your recipe for losing weight is sensible, varied, healthy eating, plus regular exercise in moderate amounts. Is that difficult
