How to Crochet a Homemade Afghan
- 1). Chain 250 stitches to create an afghan that is roughly 6 1/2 feet long. Make a chain by hanging a slip knot off your hook, wrapping the yarn around the hook from right to left, and pulling the wrap through the slip knot. Pull the next wrap through the first chain to make the third link. Chain two extra stitches as a turning chain, which will count as your first double crochet stitch.
- 2). Yarn over the hook and insert it into the third chain from the hook. Create one double crochet stitch into each of the 250 stitches you originally chained. At the end of the row, chain one stitch and turn your work.
- 3). Work one single crochet stitch into each double crochet stitch of the previous row. When you reach the end of the row, chain three stitches and turn your work. Turning your work means that you flip the piece 180 degrees. The working yarn is coming from the left at the end of a row. When you turn it, the working yarn will be on the right, ready to start the next row.
- 4). Alternate rows of double and single crochet until your afghan is as wide as you want it to be. Chain one stitch before every row of single crochet and three stitches before every row of double crochet as a turning chain. Always turn your work after making the turning chain.
- 5). Work a border all the way around the edge of your afghan. There are many decorative border patterns, but two rounds of single crochet will give you a neat edge. Make one single crochet stitch into every stitch all the way around. When you come to each of the four corner stitches, work two stitches into the corner stitch, chain two and work two more stitches into the same corner stitch.
