Rain Harvesting: How Rain Can Make Life Easier

101 10
Imagine one rainy day you pull out a bottle of water from your refrigerator to drink. You look at your water bottle and wonder if there's a way to make life easier rather than keep buying from your local bottled water dealer. Perhaps the thought of utilizing rainwater has crossed your mind – a prospect that can easily prove sensible.

Access to safe drinking water has vastly improved over the past few decades in many parts of the globe. However, approximately one billion people still don't have access to potable water at all. A report released last November 2009 states that water demand will exceed supply by over 50 percent by the year 2030. That should give people a cause for concern.

While rain water still needs to be filtered before it's deemed safe for driving, it's not unusual to look into that. Why not put that rain water in storage for later use, thus saving up on your bottled water costs as well as your utility bills? In short, why not harvest rainwater?

You might be surprised to know that rainwater harvesting has been going on since biblical times in places like Palestine and Greece. Farming communities in Kutch and Baluchistan have been harvesting it for irrigation since third century B.C. In modern times, Brazil and China are doing rainwater harvesting for drinking water and for replenishment of their ground water levels. The US Virgin Islands and Bermuda even have laws requiring new construction to have rainwater harvesting capabilities for residents.

If you can afford to get a rain harvesting system for your home, you might as well do so. It might cost you in the short run, but you can have considerable savings in your water expenses in the long term. Besides, you then won't have to keep calling your water company if you suddenly don't have running water to take a shower.

If you're going to get a harvesting rainwater system, there are some free online calculators to initially help you determine how much water you'll need and can store. You can then search online for any rain harvesting providers to compare their prices and ask detailed questions. Importantly, the rain harvesting system should be easy to install and out of sight, be able to capture the rain from, say, your roof, and easily store even up to 21 barrels for future use.

In a nutshell, you can tap into that rainfall. Utilizing rainwater can help you save on water-related expenses costs, making your life easier. You can also read more about rain harvesting at About.com.
