103 18
What to do When You're In An Auto Accident · Make sure to call your insurance company to report the accident.
· Take photos of the damage to your vehicle and of all visible personal injuries.
· Return to the accident scene to look for any other evidence and also to confirm your recollection of the accident.
· Make sure to see a doctor even if you are only stiff or sore.
Pain in your neck or lower back could be the symptoms of a serious injury.
Some injuries may not become apparent until some time (even weeks) after the accident.
· Get your vehicle appraised at the best facility of your choice that can restore it to pre-accident condition.
· Give careful consideration to calling a personal injury attorney.
This should be done prior to speaking with the other driver's insurance company or his or her attorney.
Make sure to tell the attorney everything about the accident.
Remember, those conversations are private and confidential.
· Keep a diary of your condition.
Make notes of headaches, dizziness, loss of memory, inability to sleep, anxiety or fear of driving, pain and suffering, and how it affects your daily activities and relationships with family, friends, etc.
· Keep a record of visits to the doctor, including travel time or mileage to and from the office, as well as time receiving treatment or therapy.
You should also keep track of the costs of medications and other items (such as crutches, leg, wrist, knee, or neck braces) prescribed or recommended by your doctor.
· Do keep track of lost wages, and any time missed from work due to the accident.
If you are self employed it is very important to document your ability to work compared to what you could do prior to the accident.
You may need to provide evidence of previous income.
· Do not sign a release from the insurance company without first speaking with a personal injury attorney.
Make sure the release only authorizes payment for repairs to your car.
· Do not sign authorization to release your medical records to the other driver's insurance company.
Your past medical record is truly none of their business.
It is alright to sign a release from your own insurance company.
· Do not settle with the insurance company until you speak with an experienced personal injury attorney to make sure you are properly compensated for your injuries, pain and suffering, lost wages, or other expenses.
Make sure you won't need any more medical treatment and are released by your doctor.
(Even then you may still suffer after effects from the accident).
