Campground Review and Description
Description: This is a beautiful wooded campground that is located atop a promontory point overlooking the St. Louis River where it flows into Lake Superior. The campground is at a great location just down the road from the Lake Superior Zoo and below Spirit Mountain ski hill.
Pros, Cons, Attractions and Additional Comments
Pros: New management has made significant improvements - new showers and bathrooms, new reservation system, newly stocked store and wood available; sites are very nice with picnic tables, fire pits, views of the river and access to canoe/kayak rental and other boat and equipment rentals. The scenic Western Waterfront Trail is also right there - it's on the trail - and you can hike, bike, rollerblade, and have a blast. Campground is a park-like setting with room for kids or dogs to play. Pets are allowed. Family-friendly. Great new website makes it easy to communicate with staff/ management - great ideas for things to do in the area. Check out the new web site: duluthindianpointcampground.com
Cons: Nothing really. It is up on a hill, which is nice for views, but is not right on the water for canoe or kayak access. You have to walk down a ways - not far.
Attractions: St. Louis River, Clough Island, Spirit Mountain, Lake Superior Zoo, Spirit Lake Marina, Duluth Ship Canal, cruises on Lake Superior, hiking, biking, rafting on the river -- just tons of fun stuff.
They even have WiFi.
Comments: Very scenic; love Duluth area and this is close to it all. Easy access to everything about Duluth. New management has taken over.
Rating: 5
Minnesota Camping and Travel Information
From Indian Point Campground: No, it’s not exactly extreme camping, but you can pitch your tent or nestle your RV into pull through campsites on a point of land high above Spirit Bay. Tall maples, elms, and pines surround the park-like commons with campsites throughout, each having a picnic table, fire pit and hook ups. Amenities include showers, laundry, and on-site store. Firewood can be purchased, and digital explorers will appreciate our free WiFi. In the interest of family-friendly camping, of course we allow pets. Our campsites are just over a mile from Spirit Lake Marina accommodating canoe, kayak and bike rentals.
