Avoiding Accidents at Preschool

103 12
Pre-School can be a new and frightening place for a child and accidents can occur because your child simply does not know how to deal with it.
Assuming that you have already taught them how to use the potty, and they are not wearing diapers or pull-ups any more, here are two steps that can help prepare your child for accident free school days: Provide a Variety of Experiences From birth, try to give your child a variety of experiences and environments.
If this is your first child, go online and find some "mommy and me" groups in your neighborhood, and schedule a few play-dates with different children.
Rely on the experience of other moms and professionals to help you guide your child's learning and expose your children to new things.
It will help you to have a network you can go to when you have questions, and it will help your child to adapt to new environments more easily.
Contact with other people, and especially other children, will enhance your child's understanding of the world around them and they will be more accepting and less fearful of new people and places.
This way, when they enter Pre-School, they are excited about meeting their classmates and teacher, not fearful of the experience.
Encourage Vocalization of Feelings Speak to your child and always encourage them to use their words in all situations.
Ask them to describe tangible things like pictures as well as abstract things like their feelings.
Ask them to be articulate about the exact thing that they want or how they feel about things.
By interacting with your child in an adult manner, he or she will learn that they must explain their ideas in order to be truly understood - pointing and grunting should not be enough for them to get what they want.
You will be increasing their vocabulary as well as teaching them how to be specific about what they want.
That way when they get into class, they will know exactly what to tell their teacher if they have to use the restroom and they won't be afraid to ask.
If there is still a problem, you may want to speak with your child about why he or she thinks it is okay to have accidents at school or why they don't care.
If they cannot or will not explain it, you should consult your doctor.
If you or the doctor cannot determine the behavioral reason for the accidents - perhaps there could be a medical cause.
