Type 2 Diabetes - Exercise to Prevent Diabetes in Children!

Aerobic exercise is known to help prevent the development of Type 2 diabetes in children.
Investigators at the Medical College of Georgia carried out a study to determine the right amount of physical activity to make a difference.
Their study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in September 2012, included 209 overweight or obese sedentary children with an average age of 9.
4 years:
  • a low dose group was assigned 30 minutes per day of aerobic exercise,
  • a high dose group was assigned 40 minutes per day of aerobic training, and
  • an untreated group was allowed to remain sedentary.
After 13 weeks the high dose exercise group had lower insulin levels than the other two groups, showing their insulin resistance had actually decreased.
The low exercise group of children also lowered their insulin levels, although not as much as the high exercise group did, while the sedentary group kept the same insulin levels throughout.
It was also found body fat also went down in the high exercise group and, to a lesser extent, in the lower exercise group but not the sedentary group.
Visceral fat, the kind between our internal organs, showed the same pattern of shrinking only in the exercise groups, with much more loss in the higher exercise group.
Fitness, as measured by how much oxygen the children were able to take in and use, showed the same pattern.
From the above results it was concluded that 20 or 40 minutes of aerobic training per day for 13 weeks made a measurable improvement in the children.
The children's lowered insulin levels signified their bodies became more sensitive to insulin.
Insulin helps sugar to enter your body's cells, where it is converted into energy.
Type 2 diabetes develops when your body becomes resistant to insulin and the sugar is unable to enter your cells, resulting in high blood sugar levels.
Having high sensitivity to insulin is desirable to prevent the development of Type 2 diabetes.
Losing fat, especially visceral fat, likely caused the increase in the children's sensitivity to insulin.
Visceral fat acts as a hormone that helps to regulate fat and sugar, and too much of it can cause insulin resistance, leading to full-blown Type 2 diabetes.
Aerobic exercise is the kind of physical activity that makes your pulse and breathing speed up.
According to this study, a 20 minute bicycle ride or walking to and from school every day, could make a difference in a child's fitness and possibly prevent the development of Type 2 diabetes.
