December is a great time of year for a 60th birthday party. People are in the holiday spirit, and the season brings a reflective mood and an eagerness to celebrate days gone by. Include party ideas that combine the colors, mood, music and sentimentality of the season. Then pull in surprise elements to personalize the party for the guest of honor, with glittering decorations to honor 60 years. - Make a music CD mix that includes holiday songs recorded by artists in the honoree's growing-up years. In the case of someone born in the1950s, for example, pick holiday songs from artists like Frank Sinatra, Elvis, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Supremes, and others. Play the CD during the party and include new holiday songs with the old.
- Take advantage of the season to decorate with paper cutout snowflakes. Add silver glitter to make the snowflakes sparkle. Make it a goal to place 60 snowflakes throughout the house or other venue where the party will be held. If in a home setting, place snowflakes on the table where food is served, as well as in the kitchen, the living room and even bathrooms. Get cutout snowflakes from party-supply stores or print cutouts from sources online. Use clear plastic hanging wire so that the snowflakes appear to be suspended and add the effect of a birthday winter wonderland.
- For someone born in the1950s, the hippie era would be a key memory of the honoree's teenage years. Ask guests to dress like hippies from the1960s. Encourage them to wear jeans, flowered shirts, headbands and other iconic accessories from the period. Then help them give their costumes a December twist. Purchase Santa hats from dollar stores and party stores along with fake Santa beards. When guests arrive let them add to their outfits by becoming hippie Santas. Or, you can ask guests to add their own "Santa treatment" to their outfit, like bells on beads, hats and Santa beards.
- Pick out someone on the party planning team to dress as Santa. If guests are bringing gifts, make sure that they are taken upon arrival into a secret room or space. Have the surprise Santa load his bag with the birthday gifts. Then use a special chair for Santa to sit on. Have the birthday honoree sit on Santa's lap as he presents the birthday person with the gifts.
