How to Correct Surgery Scars
- 1). Consult a cosmetic surgeon about scar revision procedures. There are many things that can be done to improve the appearance of surgery scars. Depending on the level of severity, most can be done on an outpatient basis. While scars cannot be totally eradicated, procedures like laser resurfacing, dermabrasion and skin grafting can lessen visibility to an impressive degree. Procedures like these will likely have to be paid out of pocket, as medical insurance companies usually deem them cosmetic.
- 2). Talk to your doctor about silicone gel sheeting. Silicone gel sheets can be purchased at drugstores or prescribed by a physician and are designed to minimize thick scarring after injuries or surgical procedures. The silicone gel preparation is placed over the affected area and typically held in place with an adhesive-type bandage. The area should be covered in the silicone treatment as much as possible throughout the day. Results are typically visible after approximately two months.
- 3). Try an over-the-counter scar revision cream. Several brands are now available (e.g., Mederma, Pro-Sil, RejuvaSil) and are variably priced. The important thing to look for is silicone as an active ingredient. Some formulas combine vitamin E and hydrocortisone as well, but silicone should be one of the first active ingredients listed.
