How to Stop User Access to Microsoft Windows Update
- 1). Click the "Start" button and in the search box type "regedit" (without quotes). If you're using a previous version of Windows (XP or 2000), after clicking the "Start" button, click "Run" and type "regedit" (without quotes).
- 2). Click plus signs to open "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies" in the Registry Editor window. Move the mouse pointer to the "Policies" folder (left side of the window) and right-click. Select "New" and "Key" from the menu. Name the new key "Windows Update" (without quotes). Click once on the new folder to display its contents on the right side of the window.
- 3). Move the mouse pointer over to the right side of the window and right-click. Select "New" and "DWORD Value" from the menu. Name the new value "DisableWindowsUpdateAccess" (without quotes) and press "Enter" on the keyboard. Right-click the newly created value and select "Modify" from the menu.
- 4). Enter the number "1" (without quotes) in the "Edit DWORD Value" form and click the "OK" button. On the left side of the window, click the "Explorer" folder (located under the "Policies" folder) to display its contents on the right side of the window.
- 5). Move the mouse pointer over to the right side of the window and right-click. Select "New" and "DWORD Value." Name the value "NoWindowsUpdate" (without quotes). Right-click the new value and select "Modify" to open the "Edit DWORD Value" form. Enter the number "1" (without quotes) and click the "OK" button.
- 6). Click the "X" in the upper-right corner of the Registry Editor to close the window.
