How to Make a Hockey Bag Craft

Use the directions I provide here to create a small hockey bag you can use as a pin or magnet. These are fun to make for hockey moms, hockey players, or a favorite coach.
  • Age Guideline: 10 Years and Up
  • Time Required: 30 minutes (Does not include drying time)
The above age and time guidelines are estimates. This project can be modified to suit other ages and may take more or less time depending on your circumstances. For best results, read through all of these steps before you start making this craft.

Let's begin...

Gather the Supplies to Make a Hockey Bag

Start out by gathering all the supplies you will need to make this hockey pin or magnet:
You will also want to print out the template for the hockey bag:

    Now we can start...

Download and Print the Hockey Bag Pattern

The first thing you need to do, after you gather together your supplies, is to print out this hockey bag template. If you want, you can play around with the size using a graphics program on your computer.

Cut out the pattern piece, trace it onto the felt, and then cut it out the felt piece. Save the felt scraps for use in step 6. At this time, also cut two pieces of ribbon 3- to 4- inches long.

Make the Handles for Your Hockey Bag

In the previous step you should have cut the ribbons (2 pieces, each about 3- to 4-inches long) which will be your hockey bag handles. Put 2 small dabs of glue, about 1 1/2-inches apart, on the long sides of your bag template. Place the ends of the ribbon onto the glue. Use the photo here as a guideline.

Adding the Hockey Stick to the Bag

Glue the craft stick onto your felt as shown in the picture. This is supposed to look like the end of a hockey stick poking out of the bag once it is put together. If you like, you can paint the stick or color it with permanent markers.

    Stuffing Your Hockey Bag

Take just a couple small scraps of felt from step 3 and set them in the center of your hockey bag. Then put small dabs of glue all around the outside edge of your bag piece.

    Folding Your Hockey Bag

Now, carefully fold up one side of your bag piece to form a taco-shaped bag. Use the picture here as a guide. You will need to press the edges together for a little while to get the glue to set. If you prefer, you can use a hot glue gun.

    Wrapping Your Hockey Stick

This step is optional but it adds a little bit of authenticity to your hockey stick. Simply cut a thin strip of cloth tape, either medical tape or hockey tape, and wrap it around the end of the stick as in the picture here. Now you are ready to add a few more finishing touches.

You can now use the dimensional paint to add details to your pin or magnet. Above, I simply wrote my son's hockey jersey number. You can also write a person's name, team name, or anything else you want. Use your imagination and the supplies you have on hand to personalize your hockey bag..
Set the bag aside and let the paint and glue dry completely.

Once the glue and paint on the front of your hockey bag is dry, flip it over and glue the pin to the center of the back. If you prefer to make a magnet, simply replace the pin above with a magnet.
Let the glue dry completely, and then your tiny hockey bag is ready to use.
