Running Tips - Running On Days With A Wind Chill

103 191
Winter running is actually a great workout! And, there are many reasons to run during the colder weather.
You'll stay in shape and be ready for spring running.
There's another theory that the weight gain that we have during the winter is because our bodies are programmed to store fat during the winter.
If we don't keep running (or any exercising) our metabolism will also slow down.
If we keep running in the cold weather - our metabolisms will not slow down and keep that extra weight off.
Running in the colder weather by itself is not usually the problem.
I know for me the thing that I have to get over in winter is when the days are really windy.
The wind chill is really what can make you uncomfortable - and you need to adjust your running on those super windy days.
The wind chill is determined by the actual temperature and the current wind conditions.
This wind chill temperature is what it actually feels like outside.
Wind increases heat loss in the body - so you need to watch when you are running.
So, you need to be cautious when you are running on those days when the wind chill is extreme.
If you find yourself running on those days - one of the things that you want to do is determine which way the wind is blowing.
Plan your run so that you are running into the wind as you get started.
Then after you turn around, the wind will be behind you during the last half of your run.
Also, don't do a speed workout or anything hard during these days.
Just do nice easy runs when the wind chill is very low.
Another thing that you can do is to run shorter loops around your home (or from wherever you started).
Then, if the weather turns worse - or you find that you just can handle the extreme wind - you can finish up your run.
You also want to make sure that you are properly dressed for those windy days.
Hat and gloves are a must as that is where you lose most of your body heat.
Also, wear a wind proof or wind resistant - but breathable - jacket.
This will help keep your body core warm.
Be aware of your body and how you are feeling.
If you feel signs of hypothermia coming on - make sure that you cut your run short.
There is an increased chance of hypothermia when the wind chill is -20 degrees.
Running in the winter is a great way to stay in shape.
Just make sure that you take the proper precautions and to be prepared for those really cold days.
