How to Put Lights on a Garage

    • 1). Measure the trim surrounding the door of the garage. If you plan to mount the lights elsewhere, such as on the face of the garage or around the outer trim as well, also measure these areas to get an accurate idea of how many strands of lights you'll be using. If you're using 50-foot strands, simply divide the total of your measurements by 50 to determine the number of strands required.

    • 2). Screw in a mounting hook at the bottom of one side of the garage's trim, continuing upward and leaving about 1 foot of space in between each hook. Use gloves to protect your hands from the cold and the points of the hooks.

    • 3). Set up your ladder at an appropriate height to reach the top of the garage's trim. Continue installing the hooks using the method described above. Dismount the ladder and continue down the other side of the trim. If hanging lights on the garage's face or its outer trim continue installing hooks as desired, using the ladder as needed.

    • 4). Fit the wires of the strands over the mounting hooks, starting from the bottom of the trim. When making your way up to the top of the trim, mount the ladder and have an assistant feed you the strand as you progress. Continue down the other side of the trim, plugging in additional strands to the ends of previous ones as needed.

    • 5). Mount the remaining strands on the outer trim or face of the garage if you have installed the necessary mounting hooks.

    • 6). Run the cord outside and connect the male end of the strands to the female end of a heavy-duty electrical extension cord. Plug the extension cord into a 120-volt outlet in your garage or home.
