How to Make Your Own Hanging Nursery Letters

    • 1). Decide on a type of decorative paper that works with the theme of the room. Scrapbook paper is ideal, as it is thicker than regular paper and features several types of colors and designs. For example, for a girl's room that features flowers, choose pink flowered paper. Alternatively, you can use plain paper and decorate it with your own artwork or stamps.

    • 2). Place a piece of cardboard on a flat surface. Place the paper on top of the cardboard with the decorative side facing down.

    • 3). Trace letter stencils on the back of the paper with a pencil. Use stencils that are approximately 1 to 1 1/2 feet tall and 8 to 10 inches wide. Stencils that feature a whimsical font are ideal for use in a nursery.

    • 4). Use a craft knife to cut out the letters. Carefully press the craft knife into the paper and slowly move it around the pencil lines of each letter. The cardboard will protect the work surface from damage.

    • 5). Pick the paper and carefully remove the letters from the paper.

    • 6). Punch holes in the top of each letter. If the letter has two separate top points, such as an "M" or an "X," punch a hole in each of the top points. If the letter has a single top point, such as an "I" or and "O," punch the holes in the top of the letter so that they are side-by-side.

    • 7). Cut a 2 foot length of decorative ribbon for each letter. Thread the ribbon through each of the holes. Pull the ribbon through the holes so that an even amount extends up and out of each hole.

    • 8). Tie the top of the ribbon on each letter into a bow. Use the bows to hang the letters from hooks or nails on a wall, spelling out a name or a word.
