Do you know what you want to achieve?
Many people spend their days working on low value, unimportant tasks in both their work and personal lives. Perhaps this is one reason why so many people feel that they never get ahead in their careers and instead simply continue a mediocre existence in their professional lives. How can you make sure that you are accomplishing the most important tasks at any given time?
The most important thing you can do when setting out to achieve personal success is to decide exactly what you want in each area of your life. It may sound simple enough, and perhaps it is simple. Simplicity, however, should not be confused with unimportance, triviality, or ease. Just because it is simple, doesn't mean that it is not important. Likewise, even if you have heard this a million times before, this doesn't make any difference unless you actually put this concept and similar concepts into action in your own life.
If you could have anything you wanted over the next year, five years, or even 10 years, what would you choose? Don't shrug this question off as a waste of your time. Perhaps at this moment, you are forced to complete tasks in which you have no interest at all because they are required by your employer. That's okay, since not everything you do will be fun or immediately relevant to your own goals (although certainly getting your paycheck each week must be a consideration in achieving your goals).
Wherever you are in your life right now, and whatever you may be doing in your work or personal life, take some time today to begin thinking about your long-range objectives. If you could do anything, what would it be? What would you change about your life? How much would you be earning two years from now if you could wave a magic wand and make it happen? Where would you live? How would you improve your family relationships, marital happiness, or spiritual and religious life?
It is amazing how simply asking these questions can set in motion a long series of positive choices which will ultimately lead to your success. You must determine what you want in each area of your life, then you must break these goals down into smaller, more manageable tasks to be accomplished each month, each week, and ultimately each day. These small tasks will accumulate and help you move toward your major goals in life.
