DIY Radon Detector
- 1). Radon test kits come in various forms, but the most common short-term at-home test kits include charcoal canisters, alpha track, electret ion chamber, continuous monitors and charcoal liquid scintillation detectors. Visit the website of or write to the American Lung Association, the Environmental Protection Agency, or any number of local organizations to obtain an approved radon test kit.
- 2). Follow the instructions on your at-home radon test kit. Close your windows and outside doors, and keep them closed as much as possible during the testing time. Do not operate fans or other machines that circulate outside air through the house. If you are performing a test that lasts two to three days, close your windows and outside doors at least 12 hours before beginning the test. The test kit should be placed in the lowest lived-in level of the home (like a basement if it's frequently used, or the first floor). Do not place it in your kitchen or bathroom. Place the kit at least 20 inches above the floor in an undisturbed location, away from drafts, high heat, high humidity and exterior walls. Leave the device in place as long as indicated on the package.
- 3). Mail the package right away for analysis to the address indicated on the package or instructions. You should receive the test results within a few weeks.
