    Tree Laws

    • Some cities, counties and states have tree laws preventing the removal of any trees, including eucalyptus trees, without obtaining a proper permit. In order to get a permit, you may need to hire a professional arborist to assess the tree in order to determine whether or not you have grounds to request a removal.
An arborist may recommend removal for trees that have signs of disease, cause obstruction which you cannot fix by pruning, harm other plants or trees, or pose a hazard. The government may conduct its own inspection as well.
In addition to the professional opinion, you'll have to file the correct paperwork and pay any necessary filing fees. If you fail to get the proper permit before removing your tree, the government may fine you for the removal.

    Tools

    • In order to remove an eucalyptus tree, you need the right tools. Use a chain saw to cut through the eucalyptus tree, but plan to have extra blades, as the hardwood of the tree will quickly wear down the metal. If you work from the top of the tree down, you may need to use ropes to support limbs as you cut them. Depending on the height of the tree, you may need a special lift to work from the top of the tree to keep you stable as you operate the chain saw. With shorter trees, it might be possible to use a ladder, but you must have a secure position to avoid injury or accidents.
Once you remove the bulk of the tree, focus on the stump. You can dig a eucalyptus stump out with a back hoe, or you can drill it out. For these tools, look into renting commercial-grade equipment. You can also debark the stump and poison the remaining wood with herbicides.

    Tree Removal

    • Whether you start at the top of the tree and work your way down or vice versa depends on certain circumstances. Evaluate whether or not the tree might fall onto a building, a house, power lines or cars. If so, you'll need to remove the tree by sections. If the tree can fall in any direction without landing on something, you can fell the tree from the bottom. Wind and the lean of the tree may also require consideration.
Before you begin your undercut, plan an escape route. Make sure you can escape in several directions in case the tree doesn't fall in the direction you intended. To fell the tree, make an undercut on the side of the tree facing the direction you want the tree to fall. The undercut should be a 45-degree cut reaching a quarter of the way through the base of the tree.
On the opposite side of the tree slightly higher than that undercut, make the back cut, which is a straight cut covering most of the remaining distance across the diameter. Do not cut all the way through the tree to connect the back cut and the undercut. Allow the tree to fall and then chop it into smaller pieces you can remove (this is known as limbing and bucking).
If you aren't familiar with the process and the necessary tools, hire a professional. Hiring a professional service can save you time and money, because the company should have the necessary tools and chemicals to safely remove the tree.
