The Glasgow Theatre Scene Has Enjoyed A Resurgence In Recent Years

The Glasgow theatre scene has enjoyed something of a resurgence in recent years.
In fact, its not only the theatre scene but also the entire arts and culture scene in the city which has enjoyed a cultural renaissance.
Glasgow, once a viewed by many as a depressing and industrialised urban metropolis with a reputation for violence, drugs and poverty has successfully re-invented itself into a vibrant and contemporary city with a blossoming cultural scene.
That's no mean feat for this huge city which is the largest city in Scotland, and fourth largest in the United Kingdom.
The amazing transformation culminated in the city being awarded international recognition at the start of the 1990's when it was designated European City of Culture and then, just a few years later being awarded the equally prestigious City of Architecture.
The theatre scene has undergone a transformation of similar magnitude and would be practically unrecognisable to arts lovers of just 10 years ago.
One of the city's most venerable theatres, The Kings Theatre, has recently had a major multi-million pound refit which has established it, once again, as one of the most impressive venues anywhere in Scotland, and a fitting home for the world famous annual Pantomime that is held there.
In a more contemporary style, the Clyde side redevelopment and the construction of the distinctive Armadillo centre which lies next to the cavernous Scottish Exhibition And Conference Centre means that the city now boasts a range of world class venues that can cater for all kinds of events from small arts productions up to international conferences and seminars.
With many exciting developments in the pipeline and sales of theatre tickets rising every month, it looks as if this fine city might finally be shedding some of its negative images of the past.
