Lots of people love shopping, and for many of them, there's a different type of shopping which ranks as their favourite.

Some will happily spend many hours in one of our major indoor shopping centres, feeling safe that, whatever the weather, their browsing and buying time won't be interrupted.

Others will head into the city, where they will hope to take advantage of the widest possible variety of shops, from the big and glamorous department stores, to much smaller, independent shops which can help give any big town a welcome splash of individuality.

Yet more hanker after the longer-established high streets, with their range of family-run businesses, which have often been passed down through several generations. These are the types of stores where the staff take the time and trouble to get to know their customers by name, and pride themselves on keeping alive the tradition of personal service.

Yet for some, it has to be recognised that spending a couple of hours shopping whatever their favourite type of destination is purely a luxury thanks to the busy lives they lead. And there are also those who will try to avoid shopping of any kind, seeing it as a chore rather than something which can offer any pleasure.

It's the people who fall into this last category who are most likely to find online shopping their favourite method of buying goods, both for themselves, and others.

And if the growth of online retailing is anything to go by, this type of shopper is more prevalent than many might think. The adoption of online shopping has varied according to the type of goods being bought, but in many instances, it has become the favourite way to buy.

Of course, it necessitates the use of a reliable and timely delivery service, which may or may not be provided by the retailer itself. Many of the businesses selling online, however, just aren't big enough to have such resources, and so the task is entrusted to a third-party courier. And that makes perfect sense the seller of the goods concentrating on their particular specialism, while the delivery company in turn is called in to do what it is good at.

It's great news for people who don't count shopping as one of their top pursuits, because they no longer need feel that they are missing out on the undoubted enjoyment that comes from treating themselves, or someone close to them, to a new purchase.
