How to Trim a Lombardy Poplar
- 1). Remove any dead, damaged and diseased branches at the poplar's branch collar, which is the bulge in the wood where the branch meets the trunk. Remove these branches anytime they occur with the loppers.
- 2). Use pruners to cut off any suckers or water sprouts that occur around the base or on the trunk of the tree.
- 3). Trim back any branches growing less than 6 to 8 feet tall. Cut these branches off the Lombardy poplar with loppers at the branch collar.
