How to Light an Acetylene Torch

104 10
    • 1). Place the bottle key onto the acetylene tank's square valve control shaft, quickly open and close the valve to clear it. Wrap the threads of the valve with Teflon tape.

    • 2). Attach the gas regulator to the threaded area of the tank valve, press the regulator toward the valve and turn the regulator nut counter-clockwise to thread the gas regulator onto the acetylene tank.

    • 3). Thread the hose connected to the acetylene torch to the outlet port of the gas regulator and tighten the hose to the regulator with the adjustable wrench.

    • 4). Close the gas valve on the torch and then turn the bottle key 1/4-turn to pressurize the torch system.

    • 5). Apply leak-testing solution to the shaft area of the acetylene tank and each connection between the tank gas valve and the torch handle. If you see tiny bubbles forming on a connection, turn off the bottle gas valve and make sure that the connection is tight. Do not proceed to the next step until you have no leaky gas connections.

    • 6). Turn on the acetylene torch gas valve and place the striker into the flowing gas.

    • 7). Push the handle of the striker to cause the striker flint to spark, lighting the acetylene torch. If the gas does not ignite within three attempts with the striker, turn off the acetylene gas and ventilate the area. Reattempt to light the gas after you allow the area to air out for at least three minutes.
