For any website to perform as it was designed, it must work properly which means more than just showing up on a browser. In an era with so many advances in web design and the creation of some of the most interesting and creative web pages, there is actually a downside to this that has been created by so many ways to access the internet on so many different types of devices. A problem has indeed been created and this is where the use of Responsive Web Design or RWD can be very useful.

Explanation

Responsive Web Design is the workaround answer to accessibility that is efficient yet profitable. If a site is not easily viewed on desktop and laptop systems as well as smartphones and tablets, all of which come in different resolutions and screen sizes, it is nearly the same as not being viewed at all. Dealing with this accessibility issue tends to work against the whole point of having an internet presence and create an issue that must be seriously contemplated.

Consistency

In order to address the problem of how to ensure a consistent website presentation no matter what device is used, designing with RWD is an effective approach. Starting out as a way for a website to determine whether it was accessed by a computer or a smartphone in order to choose between different layouts, RWD has grown to be much more fluid. With so much variation even within classes of devices, RWD involves web page design that is essentially trained to interpret the screen size of the viewing device and then modify formatting to fit.

Construction

RWD works in the way an internet page is constructed. Within the CSS coding are scripts to detect the screen width of the device as well as instructions on how to display page content. Although this method is not foolproof, it is getting better with the move toward a grid-based website structure. By dividing content into columns, it is be more easily reformatted to fit without negatively affecting other aspects such as images and headers. Automatic reformatting of a four or five column page that needs to be easily accessible on a smartphone will be much better than using a two-column format.

Future-Proof

Another huge benefit of designing with RWD is that it allows for a website to be well prepared for the future. Once scripts are put in and a page is performing appropriately on different size screens, that is all that needs to be done. As changing technology over the years brings even more types and sizes of wireless devices, nothing more will have to change; scripts can continue to do all the work, adapting an internet page so that an optimal view for that particular device is presented.

Responsive Web Design is still in its infancy, catching on very quickly as more and more people understand its value. There is a lot to be said for the impression a company can present when viewers reach a mobile page and it is optimized to look just as professional as the main website. As if there are not already enough things on which a business' internet presence is judged, adding this to the list is not very helpful. So that is the inside scoop on Responsive Web Design - and for the amount of effort that is actually involved, it is quite beneficial to any company using RWD!
