4 Common Dental Problems and How to Treat Them
Your mouth is comprised of parts that are interconnected in such a way that if one is unwell and left untreated, the other parts may also decline into poor health.
The teeth, gums, tongue and palate are main structures within your mouth that need equal attention.
There are at least 4 common dental problems, and how to treat them depends on how quickly we address them and their severity.
1.
Cavities.
Cavities or tooth decay results from the destruction of the enamel that serves to protect the tooth.
Failure to totally clean your teeth, gums and tongue will allow an increased concentration of bacteria in your mouth.
The bacteria come into contact with the sugar in your food and form an acid that eats away your dentin enamel.
This protective structure will gradually decay and eventually collapse forming those cavities.
Regular brushing and flossing, and healthy habits like non-smoking and not drinking too much alcoholic beverage will help avoid cavity formation.
2.
Wisdom teeth problems.
Also called third molars, when they completely erupt through the gums in correct placement wisdom teeth are an asset.
Generally, this doesn't happen.
They usually come out misaligned.
If not removed, wisdom teeth often result in pain, tooth decay, damage to adjacent teeth, swelling, gum disease and even cysts and tumors.
Immediate removal should be done by a dental professional.
Extraction is usually done under anesthesia.
3.
Sensitive teeth.
Tooth aches are sometimes due to sensitive teeth.
Teeth sensitivity is brought about by constantly thinning enamel or exposed roots.
One cause is teeth grinding while you're sleeping which will corrode the protective tooth enamel.
The root surface of the tooth may become exposed due to many reasons that include diseases of the gum and incorrect brushing.
A special kind of toothpaste is available that is intended for use to alleviate tooth hypersensitivity.
You may also use a fluoride gel which acts as a primer on your tooth wall, or even a filling, crown or plastic sealant to cover the surface of your teeth.
4.
Bleeding gums.
This may be caused by gum infection or the more serious gingivitis.
Lack of vitamins, hormonal imbalance or poorly fitting dentures may also cause the gums to bleed.
In most cases, bleeding is easily treatable primarily by having proper oral hygiene.
Use a toothbrush with soft bristles.
Hard bristles aggravate your teeth and wear away the protective enamel.
Floss accurately but gently, taking extra precaution not to consistently hurt your gums.
Gargle using warm water with a pinch of salt three times daily.
Be careful not to use a mouth rinse that contains alcohol.
These are common dental problems which can be treated by doing your oral and dental hygiene routine properly.
How to treat them depends upon your willingness to receive guidance from your dentist.
A regular visit to the dental clinic will help avoid more serious problems.
