Milk for Kids
Whilst milk is not mandatory for a kid's diet, the nutrients provided by milk and the flexibility of its use is hard to go past. It is also important to know what is the right type of milk, what are the right quantities and when should you be giving milk. If it's a desirable option, yoghurt is a healthier and more nutritious diary product for kids than cow's milk. Yoghurt can be given to kids from the age of nine months.
For infants less than 12 months do not use cow's milk, breast milk or formula milk should be used. Full fat milk is only required by kids under two as non-fat milk has lower caloric densities and places excess minerals on these still developing kidneys. Begin the transition from full fat milk to low fat milk from 18 to 24 months of age. Full fat dairy milk and cheese the greatest sources of saturated fat. Whilst full fat milk is a great source of calcium, skim milk provides a slightly higher source of calcium. Kid under 5 years old should not be given skim milk (99.9% fat free).
Teenagers need two to three times more calcium than younger kid. Teenagers should have between 3 to 5 serves of reduced fat milk and younger kid should have two to three serves per day. This is because they're building bone mass three times more rapidly during the teenage growth spurt years.
Kid's growing bones and teeth need a lot of calcium, milk is a good source of calcium. Milk provides vitamin A and vitamin B plus a whole lot of protein that kids need for energy and to grow. For those who battle to get their kids to drink milk, try adding milk flavouring to reduced fat milk or buy flavored milk, they come in many flavours.
Long life milk and UHT milk are just as good as ordinary milk for kids; they should be used in the same way as ordinary milk. Untreated cow's milk should be boiled for toddlers, as this will kill any germs. These germs are already treated when you buy pasteurized and homogenized milk. Full fat calcium fortified soy beverages are suitable for use after 1 year of age as part of a mixed diet. Soy drinks that do not have calcium added are not best for toddlers. Goat's milk has fewer vitamins than cow's milk, particularly folic acid (folate). Goat's milk is very similar to cow's milk and can be given after 12 months. Rice milk is a liquid made from rice and is not a substitute for breast or cow's milk. Coconut milk is not really milk in this context and is not a substitute for breast or cow's milk.
