How to Make a Motor Insurance Claim
- 1). Contact the local police department at the scene of the accident and give the operator your location. A police report will help the claims process.
- 2). Speak to any witnesses to the accident and ask if they would be comfortable discussing the accident with your insurance company. Get names and contact information for all witnesses.
- 3). Get the other driver's name, address and phone number, along with the name of his insurance company, policy number and license plate number. The other driver's information might be provided on the police report, of which you will receive a copy.
- 4). Write down as much information as you can remember about the accident as soon as you leave the scene.
- 5). Contact the other driver's insurance company if you were not at fault. Inform the company that you have filed a claim with your insurance provider.
- 6). Complete the phone interview when the other driver's insurance representative contacts you. The insurance representative will ask for a detailed report of your version of the accident. Use the notes you took after the accident to provide accurate details.
- 7). Make an appointment with the insurance adjuster, who will need to look at your vehicle before you can receive a check.
