How to Stop a Smelly Drain
- 1). Turn on the water in the sink or bathtub with the smelly drain. Allow the water to run for one or two seconds, just long enough to wet the inside of the drain.

Combine 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1/4 cup of table salt in a bowl. Slowly pour the dry mixture into the smelly drain. The dampness inside the drain helps the baking soda and salt stick. Allow the mixture to sit inside the drain for 15 minutes to begin deodorizing the drain and loosening odor-causing materials. - 3). Heat 1 cup of white vinegar in a cooking pot on the stove until it's hot, but not boiling.
- 4). Pour the hot vinegar down the drain. As the vinegar comes in contact with the baking soda mixture it will foam. Leave the mixture inside the drain for 15 minutes to finish loosening odor-causing materials and ridding your drain of the smell.
- 5). Run hot water into your drain for 30 seconds to rinse away the baking soda, salt and vinegar mixture.
