Fibre comes from plants and cannot be digested, has no calories or provide energy. As it has no calories and makes you feel fuller, it can help towards losing weight. If you feel full, it means you are not going to snack on sweets and crisps during the day. Low fat diets that contain a lot of complex carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables are naturally high in fibre and low in calories help towards losing weight.

Fibre comes in two forms, soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibre helps to lower cholesterol and also stabilises your blood sugar level by slowing down the absorption of glucose in your bloodstream. Insoluble fibre can be found in oats, brown rice, pulses, beans and fruit and vegetables. Insoluble fibre moves along your digestive system absorbing small amounts of water and expanding as it moves through the bowels. This helps to prevent constipation and helps to protect you against certain cancers.

When you increase your fibre intake, you should also increase your fluid intake. It is recommended that you drink at least 8 glasses of water each day, and cut down on caffeine. At first, you may find that you feel a bit bloated and have a bit of wind. This is temporary and you will feel better within a couple of days. Increasing your daily activity can help to move things along in by stimulating the muscles in your torso area. There is new research to suggest that by consuming high fibre from a variety of food sources can reduce bowel cancer by up to 40%. Woman that eat plenty of fruit and vegetables and wholegrain cereals can lower their chance of getting breast cancer.

A diet high in fibre can help with irritable bowel syndrome, but does not always work for everyone. In fact, for some people it can actually make their symptoms worse. The only way to find out is to have a diet high in fibre for a month, and then the following month cut out certain foods to find the culprit. Certain foods that can make IBS worse are wholemeal bread, biscuits and cereals. Try cutting out one of these for a period of time to see if your IBS improves. Excluding one at a time will help you find which foods you need to avoid in your diet. If you are unsure and your IBS is getting worse then please see your local doctor.
