Wedding Registry Basics
- There are no set rules for choosing items for your bridal registry. You are free to choose the items that you need most. Traditionally, couples register for household items in order to prepare for their new homes with their new spouses. A typical wedding registry includes china, everyday dishware, stemware, barware, flatware, linens, bathroom accessories and kitchen appliances (a sample checklist can be found on The Knot [see resources below]). However, in today's day and age, many couples find themselves with those essential needs already met and can register for less traditional items such as electronics, honeymoon vouchers and furniture.
- Choosing where to register is completely up to you and your future spouse, but keep in mind the accessibility of the stores for your wedding guests. After all, your guests will be the ones purchasing the gifts for your special occasion, so making it convenient for them is the key. Consider places that will offer items in a wide price range to accommodate guests with varying budgets. Some of the most popular wedding registries include Target, Macy's, Kohl's and Bed Bath and Beyond; these retail chains are located throughout the country.
Consider registering online. For those who are afraid of the overwhelming task of searching through a store's many departments to choose items (and for those who want to avoid public squabbles with their significant others), online registries are a perfect alternative. When registering online, make sure that at least half your items are available in stores for guests who do not shop online. Note that many of the larger store chains have online registries available that can be accessed by guests either online or in-store. Gifts can be purchased online or in stores once your registry is complete. - Most engaged couples register at two to three locations. Not only does this make it easier on your guests (especially if one of the stores is not convenient to them) but it also allows you to register for all of the items you need, ranging from housewares and decor to gardening supplies and electronics.
- Every store is a little different, but for the most part registering for your wedding gifts will be a similar process. If you're registering in person at a store, go to the store location nearest you and head to their customer service desk. Some stores even have a separate registry desk. From there, an employee will set up an account for you that lists your and your fiance's first and last names. Most stores will give you a scanner that allows you to easily scan the bar codes of the items you wish to place on your registry. Once you scan the item, it will show up on your registry for guests to purchase.
If you are registering online, visit the store's website and look for their bridal, wedding or gift registry section. You will set up your own account and then browse through their website to find products that you want. To add something to your registry, simply click the "add to registry" button. Check on your registry throughout the registering process to make sure that everything is working properly and the items are being added. If you notice any glitches, contact customer service via email or phone. Once your registry is set up, you can sign into your account as you wish to add or delete items.
