    • 1). Read the rules for civil procedure regarding service of process for your jurisdiction. Each jurisdiction, federal, state or local, has civil procedure rules that detail how service of process must to be made. The rules outline how process must be served, upon whom process may be served and who may serve process. In most cases, a process server must be at least 18 and unconnected to the case.

    • 2). Contact a local process server association, organization or a local court for information regarding the profession in your jurisdiction. Some states require that process servers become licensed or certified and have insurance. Some require both. Obtain the specific information for your jurisdiction about how to become credentialed and where to obtain insurance.

    • 3). Fulfill the requirements for your jurisdiction. Read the applicable rules of civil procedure. Apply for and obtain the position of process server agent with a process-serving agency.
