How to Work With Asbestos Cement
- 1). Put on all of your protective ans safety gear. You should have disposable overalls, safety goggles, heavy duty gloves, and a face mask. If asbestos is left on your clothing or on your skin, you can easily breathe it in when the job is complete, and you need to prevent that from happening.
- 2). Lay out the polythene drop cloths on the ground, covering everything on the surface. Asbestos will stick to anything and bury itself in material fibers.
- 3). Place the chisel inside of a crack or seam where the asbestos cement was put together. Gently tap it with the hammer so not to cause a huge piece to fall and shatter. Work as lightly as possible with asbestos cement so it does not break, causing asbestos to lift into the air.
- 4). Pull the piece of cement away and lay it gently on the polythene cloth. Do not drop it. Continue with this until the entire cement area has been removed and is lying on the cloth.
- 5). Pick up the pieces and place them inside of heavy duty garbage bags. If the pieces are small, you can wrap up the entire cloth and stick it in the garbage bag. If they are large, it will be easier to place them in the bag and then throw the cloth away separately.
- 6). Seal each garbage bag with a knot and duct tape to prevent asbestos from coming out. Place each bag inside of another to double bag them for safety purposes. Be sure to throw your overalls away and wash your hands, arms, and face.
