How Studying Piano Benefits Children

It is unfortunate that when educational budget cuts are necessary, music is often one of the first extracurricular classes to go. Many that do not have a knowledge of music see it as arbitrary and nonessential, but studying this art can go far beyond providing children with the ability to master scales and arpeggios. Piano lessons in particular give a student a foundation for many other important skills. Here are just a few of the gifts a child who masters piano receives:

1. Self Confidence.
Every child is different in natural talents and learned abilities. Culture gives a very narrow idea of what makes a person "good enough". The more healthy situations to which children are exposed and the more varied skills they acquire, the better the chance for them to gain confidence that they can excel within their own unique abilities. As a child masters each new musical concept, he can easily see his progress as he advances to more difficult and pleasant-sounding pieces. This fosters a sense of self-worth that is mandatory to his becoming a healthy person overall.

2. Discipline.
To be truly successful in life, each person must have a degree of discipline to get themselves out of bed and on to a productive day. Discipline is necessary for consistent work and even for results in hobbies such as fitness, golf and fishing. It is much easier to learn this as a child than to overturn bad habits as an adult. To master piano, a student must have the discipline to practice each day. This is naturally built by his knowledge that he will have to play for his instructor on a weekly basis and suffer embarrassment if he has not disciplined himself to practice. It is much better to face those consequences than those of not being diligent on the job!

3. Creativity.
While most people consider creative pursuits to involve some type of artwork, not all children are able to express themselves in this way. Music can be very much an outlet for creativity. Once basic principles and techniques are learned, there is no limit to what can be conceived in the mind of a musically talented person. Art is conveyed through a piano just as much as it is through a paintbrush.

4. Mathematical Application.
For children that are mathematically inclined, music study can balance their analytical and artistic sides. Musical theory is full of math. For those children that struggle with mathematical concepts, music can often be the key to increasing their understanding.

5. Non-verbal Expression of Ideas.
Society is very much absorbed in words as a way to express itself. However, there are many ways to express oneself without speaking. Drama is one such example. Mimes also show the value of expressing ideas without words. Mood can be detected through a piano passage by the youngest of babies. This is demonstrated by the types of melodies employed for their lullabies. Classical composers have created epic works that have spoken to many on a deep level but have no lyrics.

When parents choose an extra-curricular activity for their children, they would do well to consider signing them up for piano lessons. The lessons learned are advantageous to success in life now and later.
