flaring

106 11

Definition: Flaring, or displaying is a behavior commonly seen in Betta species.  The fish extends his or her fins (females also flare) and open their gills as wide as possible. This behavior makes them appear larger and more intimidating to other Bettas.  During a display, the colors of the Betta will also darken or intensify, and the ‘beard’, which are the gill membranes, will be visible through the oprm gills.

Bettas generally only flare at other Bettas, but at times they may flare at species that look similar to them.  This is particularly true if they feel their territory is being threatened.  Bettas will also flare if startled by something within their tank, or by external movements. Holding a mirror to the tank with a male Betta will often result in a display of flaring.

Some males will flare readily at the sight of anything out of the ordinary, while others are more sedate, only flaring at obvious threats. When two male Bettas flare, it is often followed by a fight that may include fin nipping and locking mouths. Usually the fighting will end with few injuries, but if two males are kept in close quarters, they will invariably continue to fight until one of them is dead.

Male Bettas will also display or flare, when they are interested in a female, as part of the courtship ritual.
