Standing at 4,461 feet, Blood Mountain is Georgia's sixth tallest mountain and is a popular stop along the Appalachian Trail. At the summit sits a stone hiker's shelter, built in 1934, offering panoramic views of Chattahoochee National Forest. A rustic, 1930s-era stone shelter at the base now serves as the The Walasi-Yi Store and Interpretive Center, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The scenic hike leading from the Walasi-Yi Center to the Blood Mountain summit is the most-hiked portion of Georgia's Appalachian Trail. The area surrounding Blood Mountain offers numerous waterfalls and hiking trails, as well as streams with plentiful trout for fly-fishing. Much of the area lodging includes campgrounds, cabins, and lodges to accommodate hikers and fishermen, though several hotels and motels are available nearby as well. - Located 24 miles north of Blood Mountain, Blairsville offers the nearest hotels.
