How to Propagate Lobelia Vegetatively
- 1). Take your cuttings in the spring, before the plant blooms. Cut four to six inches from new growth, below a leaf node, using very sharp shears. Try to get a cutting with at least two nodes.
- 2). Remove the lower leaf and leave just one on the top of the cutting.
- 3). Dip the cut end of the cutting into rooting hormone, making sure that the node is covered and tapping the cutting on the side of the container to remove any excess.
- 4). Pour equal parts of perlite and sand into the pot and water well. Allow the excess water to drain from the bottom of the pot.
- 5). Poke a hole into the planting medium with a pencil and insert the hormone-tipped end into the soil. Bury the cutting so that only an inch or two, with the leaf, is exposed.
- 6). Place the potted cutting in a warm area that gets filtered sunlight.
- 7). Mist your cutting twice a day with a plant mister. Make sure to keep the soil moist, but not soggy. Your cutting should root in two to three weeks.
