How to Paint on Cement

104 21
    • 1). Clean the cement thoroughly. If there are oil spills use cat litter to soak up as much as possible and then wash thoroughly with hot water and plenty of TSP cleaner. Wipe walls down with cloths soaked in TSP and water, then wipe with cloths soaked in clear water to remove TSP residue. Mop the floor with plain water to remove any TSP.

    • 2). Inspect for cracks or holes. Wire-brush any loose cement or flaking paint. Repair cracks or holes with a concrete patch, following the manufacturer's directions. Allow the patch to dry for the recommended time before sealing and painting.

    • 3). Allow the area to dry thoroughly--at least two days after cleaning. After two days tape a plastic sheet over the cement and allow it to sit overnight. Inspect the plastic sheeting for any condensation. If there is condensation then the cement is not thoroughly dry; allow to dry for two more days.

    • 4). Apply cement floor or wall sealer. Talk to your hardware dealer about the proper sealer to purchase for your particular job. Pour the sealer into a paint tray and roll on a thin layer of sealer with your paint roller. Allow it to dry overnight. Roll on a second coat of sealer and allow it to dry overnight.

    • 5). Apply cement primer. Again, talk to your local hardware dealer about the best primer for your particular job. Use a good-quality primer. Roll on a coat of primer and allow it to dry for four hours. Roll on a second coat and allow it to dry for four hours.

    • 6). Apply a good-quality paint that is compatible with cement. Again, your hardware dealer will know what will work best in your particular location and for your specific type of job. Roll on a relatively thin coat of paint and allow it to dry for at least four hours or per manufacturer's directions. Roll on a second coat if warranted and allow it to dry a minimum of four hours.
