How to Landscape With Lilies & Ornamental Grasses
- 1). Draw an outline of your garden. Include plants that are currently in the garden. Mark an "X" where you plan to place the lilies and ornamental grasses. Cluster two lily plants with one ornamental grass plant to add more color to an area. Use only ornamental grasses to reduce or balance color. Add texture to the garden, especially if it is small, by planting lilies of different heights together. Plant three short lilies--fire lilies for instance--in front of two clusters of ornamental grass. Plant two taller lily varieties--callas lilies--behind the ornamental grass.
- 2). Maintain a garden border by alternating smaller lilies with short ornamental grasses, like variegated manna grass. Plant every other plant 5 to 8 inches away from the edge of the bed--this will create a sharp-looking border that also natural looking. Avoid placing any plant, lily or grass, directly next to another.
- 3). Create a background for your garden by planting tall lilies and grasses along the back edge of the garden. Alternate the plants again by moving every other one 5 to 8 inches away from the garden edge.
