Before They Were Game Show Hosts

106 11
Many people seem born to be a game show host, but the truth is that many of today's hosts have arrived at that point in their careers through a much different route. Check out the career paths of your favorite hosts to see just how diverse these talented folks are.

1. Alex Trebek, Jeopardy!

Alex Trebek's career has centered around hosting, but for a brief time between finishing school and jumping into the game show ring, he was a news broadcaster for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). One of his duties included sportscasting - can you imagine hearing Alex Trebek narrating a curling match? I have trouble with that too.

2. Pat Sajak, Wheel of Fortune

Most people know that Pat Sajak was a weatherman for an NBC affiliate before being spotted by Merv Griffin and offered the Wheel of Fortune gig. But did you also know that Sajak was a successful radio DJ, and even worked for Armed Forces Radio in Vietnam? In fact, Sajak replaced Adrian Cronauer, the subject of the hit movie Good Morning Vietnam.

3. Drew Carey, The Price is Right

While Drew Carey's career in comedy and television is well-documented, his career actually began with the U.S. Marine Corps where he worked for six years, attaining the rank of Corporal. Carey then went on to work as a bank teller and a waiter at a chain restaurant before embarking on the road to stand-up comedy.

4. Terry Crews, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire

Terry Crews was a professional football player in the NFL before taking on hosting duties on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. He played defensive end for the Los Angeles Rams along with three other teams before retiring. He then became an actor with multiple film and TV roles.

5. Steve Harvey, Family Feud

Steve Harvey could easily be described as a modern-day renaissance man with his numerous endeavors, including his talk show, his writing, his comedy, and of course hosting Family Feud. While Harvey has always been prolific, his jobs haven't always been quite so glamorous. Some of his early careers included working as a mailman, a carpet cleaner, and selling insurance. He even enjoyed a brief stint as a boxer.

6. Craig Ferguson, Celebrity Name Game

Craig Ferguson has worked as a comedian, talk show host, and performer for many years, and of course now he's the host of Celebrity Name Game. His beginnings were a little more humble, however. Ferguson was a construction worker when he first arrived in the United States from his native Scotland, and he also worked as a club bouncer. His entry into show business was not as a comedian, but as the drummer in a rock and roll band.

7. Brooke Burns, The Chase

Ever since her appearance on Baywatch, Brooke Burns has been a popular television personality. She currently hosts The Chase on GSN, but before she got into television work she was an aspiring ballet dancer. When an injury prevented her from pursuing dance as a career she became a model (which really isn't all that surprising). The jump from modeling to TV was a natural one for Burns, and she's been there ever since.

8. Jeff Foxworthy, American Bible Challenge

Jeff Foxworthy is well known for his comedy, redneck humor, and hosting both Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? and The American Bible Challenge. The viewing public may have been denied the chance to enjoy Foxworthy's talents, however, if he had stuck with his original career in computer maintenance at IBM.
